Overview

The Choice is a daily literary app. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.

By using The Choice, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

Information We Collect

Anonymous Identifier

Every user is assigned a randomly generated anonymous ID by Firebase Authentication. We do not collect your name, email address, or any other personally identifying information.

Usage Data

We collect records of stories you complete, including: the story ID, the date and time of completion, the choices you made, the ending you reached, how long you spent reading, and how many times you replayed a story.

This data powers your story history, streak tracking, and the global vote results you see after each story.

Device and Notification Data

If you grant permission for notifications, we store a device token (FCM token provided by Firebase Cloud Messaging) to send you daily story alerts and reminders. We also store your timezone offset to schedule notifications at the right local time.

Aggregated Vote Data

When you make a choice in a story, your selection is counted toward global vote totals for that choice. Vote counts are aggregated and not linked to your individual identity in results displayed to other users.

Advertising & Measurement Identifiers

To measure our advertising and reach new readers, we work with a mobile measurement partner, AppsFlyer, together with the ad platforms Meta (Facebook) and TikTok. These services generate an app-specific anonymous advertising identifier for every user, which we use to measure ad performance, and they may receive app events such as app opens and subscriptions. AppsFlyer attributes which ad brought you to The Choice and forwards conversion events to Meta and TikTok on our behalf. If — and only if — you grant permission via the App Tracking Transparency prompt, we may also use your device's advertising identifier (IDFA) for this purpose. You can decline, and you can change your choice at any time in your device Settings. This data is subject to AppsFlyer's, Meta's, and TikTok's Privacy Policies. We never send these partners your name, email, or the specific story choices you make.

How We Use Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We use limited advertising and measurement identifiers — and your device advertising identifier only with your permission — to understand how people discover The Choice and to show relevant ads on platforms like Meta (Facebook) and TikTok. Third-Party Services

Firebase (Google)

We use Firebase for authentication, data storage (Firestore), and push notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging / FCM). Your data is stored on Google's servers and subject to Google's Privacy Policy: policies.google.com/privacy

AppsFlyer

We use AppsFlyer, a mobile measurement partner, to understand which ads bring new readers to The Choice and to forward conversion events (such as subscriptions) to our ad platforms. AppsFlyer may receive an app-specific anonymous identifier, app events, and — only if you permit tracking — your device advertising identifier. This data is subject to AppsFlyer's Privacy Policy: appsflyer.com/legal/services-privacy-policy. We do not send AppsFlyer your name, email, or the specific story choices you make.

Meta (Facebook)

We use the Meta (Facebook) SDK to measure our advertising and reach new readers. Meta may receive an app-specific anonymous identifier, app events (such as app opens and subscriptions), and — only if you permit tracking — your device advertising identifier. This data is subject to Meta's Privacy Policy: facebook.com/privacy/policy. We do not send Meta your name, email, or the specific story choices you make.

TikTok

We share advertising measurement data with TikTok, through our measurement partner AppsFlyer, to measure our advertising and reach new readers. TikTok may receive an app-specific anonymous identifier, app events (such as app opens and subscriptions), and — only if you permit tracking — your device advertising identifier. This data is subject to TikTok's Privacy Policy: tiktok.com/legal/privacy-policy. We do not send TikTok your name, email, or the specific story choices you make.

RevenueCat

Subscription management is handled by RevenueCat. When you subscribe, RevenueCat processes and stores your purchase information, including your Apple App Store receipt and subscription status. See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy: revenuecat.com/privacy

Apple

If you make a purchase through the App Store, Apple processes that transaction under their Privacy Policy: apple.com/legal/privacy

All subscription billing is handled by Apple through the App Store. We do not have access to your payment card information.

Tracking & Advertising

When you first use the app, iOS will ask whether The Choice can track you across apps and websites owned by other companies (the App Tracking Transparency prompt).

If you allow it, we use your device advertising identifier (IDFA) together with our measurement partner AppsFlyer, Meta, and TikTok to measure which ads bring new readers to The Choice. If you decline, we do not access your IDFA — we rely only on the app-specific anonymous identifier and aggregate measurement, and the app works exactly the same.

You can change this decision at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking on your device.

Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as you continue to use the app. If you delete your data from within the app (Settings > Delete My Data), your story history and anonymous identifier will be deleted from our systems within 30 days.

Anonymous data that is inactive may be retained for up to 90 days before being automatically purged.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights under applicable law (including GDPR and CCPA) to:

  • -Access the personal data we hold about you
  • -Request correction of inaccurate data
  • -Request deletion of your data
  • -Withdraw consent at any time (e.g., disable notifications in your device Settings)
  • -Data portability where technically feasible

Children

The Choice is intended for users aged 17 and older due to mature themes in stories. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will delete it promptly.

Push Notifications

We may send you push notifications for daily story availability and reminders if you have not completed the day's story. You can disable notifications at any time in your device's Settings app.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via in-app notice. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
