Overview

The Choice is a daily literary app. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.

By using The Choice, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

Information We Collect

Account Information

If you create an account using email and password, we store your email address. If you sign in with Apple, we receive your name and email address as provided by Apple (you may choose to hide your email via Apple's relay service).

Guest (anonymous) users are assigned a randomly generated ID. No personal information is collected until you create an account.

Usage Data

We collect records of stories you complete, including: the story ID, the date and time of completion, the choices you made, the ending you reached, how long you spent reading, and how many times you replayed a story.

This data powers your story history, streak tracking, and the global vote results you see after each story.

Optional Demographics

During onboarding, you may optionally provide your age range, gender, and country. This information is used to show you how different groups voted on the same choices. Providing this information is entirely voluntary.

Device and Notification Data

If you grant permission for notifications, we store a device token (FCM token) to send you daily story alerts and reminders. We also store your timezone offset to schedule notifications at the right local time.

Aggregated Vote Data

When you make a choice in a story, your selection is counted toward global vote totals for that choice. Vote counts are aggregated and not linked to your individual identity in results displayed to other users.

How We Use Your Information

  • -To send you daily story notifications (if you opt in)
  • -To manage your subscription status
  • -To provide demographic vote breakdowns (optional)
  • -To improve the quality of future stories and features

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.

Third-Party Services

Firebase (Google)

We use Firebase for authentication, data storage (Firestore), and push notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging). Your data is stored on Google's servers and subject to Google's Privacy Policy.

RevenueCat

Subscription management is handled by RevenueCat. When you subscribe, RevenueCat processes and stores your purchase information.

Apple

If you use Apple Sign In or make a purchase through the App Store, Apple processes that transaction. Apple's Privacy Policy applies to those interactions.

All subscription billing is handled by Apple through the App Store. We do not have access to your payment card information.

Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal information (email, demographics, story history) will be deleted from our systems within 30 days.

Anonymous guest data may be retained for up to 90 days before being automatically purged.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights under applicable law (including GDPR and CCPA) to:

  • -Access the personal data we hold about you
  • -Request correction of inaccurate data
  • -Request deletion of your data
  • -Withdraw consent at any time (e.g., disable notifications in Settings)
  • -Data portability where technically feasible

Children

The Choice is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will delete it promptly.

Push Notifications

We may send you push notifications for daily story availability and reminders if you have not completed the day's story. You can disable notifications at any time in your device's Settings app.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via in-app notice or email. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
